PRINT ELECTIVE..
Im really enjoyin the print elective so far.. Our brief was on the space around us and the idea I came up with to do was how we create our own space by ignoring things that make us feel unconfortable eg homeless on the street ect.. Iv just started printing today and have cum up with a few more ideas to do with the prints.. I will post pictures soon..

SCULPTURE ELECTIVE..
I am just after finishing our two weeks of the sculpture elective. We were given a brief saying that we were to explore the vital signs and the 5 senses. However on the first monday of the elective we did big mindmaps on the floor and everyone in the contributed words to these mindmaps. At the end of the class we were told to pick words from these mindmaps and work from that word. I chose the word 'to fold' from touch. We then were told to play around with materials and to start making things and Mike Canning emphasised that this was a labratory and not a studio and we should start making sculptural experiments.Above are some of the basic folds I did.
I used pieces of cardboard to make up triangular shapes that i saw in the folds and stuck them toghether in a way that i thought looked good. When i was cutting the shapes I didnt realise that there was green on the back of the cardboard. However, I liked the effect the green had when I pieced it all toghether.
I liked the shape of this fold that i did and Mike wanted me to work on a much larger scale, so I decided to do a bigger version of this.. I got 9 pieces of A2 cardpaper and stuck them toghether to make one big piece to fold and make something out of..
Making the big piece out of the nine sheets didnt work because it was too hard to fold. so I ended up having to cut them back into individual sheets to fold them. I decided instead I would make a large piece that would go up the wall infront of my desk. I glued bit toghether and manipulated the paper to work in a way that I thought looked good. It didnt turn out as I hoped but I was happy with the end result..
I made these V shaped folds in the first week and I was just experimenting with the different types of foflds I could make.. I had an urge to pour paint down inbetween the cracks and see what would happen. I used blue and red paint which made purple when they met in the middle. It was just little experiment..
I bought a few sheets of acitate and cut them into triangle shapes and cellotaped thaem toghether in the patterns of folds. This was my favourite thing that I made during this elective and unfortunately I didnt discover it until the last day of the elective. What I liked about this was that the triangles could move freeely in different ways to make different forms and shapes..

CUBES..
I came up with the idea of making paper cubes and on each side of the cubes I could put a different part of the face. The ide was that it would almost be like a rubics cube or puzzle. I drew five portraits altoghether of me, friends and family and made 9 paper cubes. I cut the portraits up and put them on the the sides of the squares .. I was happy with how it turned out and it was pretty fun to rearrange the cubes in different ways..

MORE GROWTH AND EXPANSION OF BULIDINGS..
I have been working lately with expansion and groth in cities and how they contantly are changing. Recently I have made a 3d piece made of the same wood sticks that I have used before.. I am working with the idea that more and more houses and buildings are are being built and that these living spaces are essentially just a box or square shape and that we all basically just live in cubes.. I stacked these square shaped boxes on top of each other in a pattern and basically just ballenced them in a certain way that i liked and thought looked interesting..
I cahnged a few of the squares around for the second bit of the pice and put some of the smaller boxes in larger ones just seeing what I could do with it.. I thought this would be an easy piece to create as it is quite simple but it was actually quite hard and it took a while to get them to ballance correctly.. it kind of reminded me of playing jenga :)

PUSHING AND PULLING
IT WAS SO MUCH FUN MESSING UP THE STRUCTURE THST TOOK ME AGES TO TO MAKE AND I THOUGHT IT LOOKED QUITE INTERESTING IN THE END AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL PIECE OVER ALL..
TWISTING
SECOND ATTEMPT WITH WIRE..
FIRST ATTEMPT WITH WIRE..
My first attempt of building the structure with wire was a complete and utter fail.. I had no iddea how to use wire and for some reason just presumed that i would be able to use it. Elaine came around to me and saw what I had been making and basically told me to stop while i was ahead and start a new one. This time she taught me how to make the grids properly using smaller wire to tie the ends toghether and a plyers to create sharp corners.. I was delghted with my second attempt and i thought it came out better than I expected. Des elaine and Giordana came around and suprisingly Des liked the first one that i made which was suprising..
MORE BUILDINGS..
These are some pictures that a friend told me about and thought that they would be relevent to my project.. They are pictures from the Irish Times of the ballymun flats being demolished.. I love the way that u can see the cubes that make up the building and the grids!!
when i was down in UL a few weeks ago, i noticed that they were building new accomadaition.. It was just the structure of the buildings that were up and it was just a bunch of grids up on yop of each other. This gave me the idea to make wire structure of a building and move the structure in different ways and just play around with it and see what I could do with it..

MY INSPIRATIONS
This artist JR is really cool.. I love the idea of his project and it's a good video.. so watch!!
MY FIRST STOP MOTION VIDEO..
i photocopied the drawing of the other piece and basically just had fun with it and played around a bit.. it was my first time trying this kind of thing so its not very good but hopefully ill do a better one soon. I probably shouldnt have done the effects as the top video looks alot better.. i think
LITTLE TINY BUILDINGS
I started off this idea by drawing up some sketches plans and measurements. I then made these rectangular boxes out of paper.. it was tricky because every box's measurements had to be exactly right or otherwise they would not fit..
I expected this part of the process to be alot easier than it was.. maybe for my next one ill use a different material and not paper..
I then drew a picture of my eyes and cut them up to the exact measurements and stuck them onto the paper. The idea I had for this piece was that we are the people who make up the city and that these buildings are there because of us. I also liked the idea for this as you actually have to physically move araound it to see what the image is. I have ideas for my next one of these and I am going to push the idea further..
I expected this part of the process to be alot easier than it was.. maybe for my next one ill use a different material and not paper..
