PUSHING AND PULLING

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN MESSING UP THE STRUCTURE THST TOOK ME AGES TO TO MAKE AND I THOUGHT IT LOOKED QUITE INTERESTING IN THE END AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL PIECE OVER ALL..

TWISTING

I took pictures of the structure from above and I had md my friend ailbhe help me twist it.. I really like the idea of getting a solid structure and manipulating it and playing around and seeing what you can do with it.. This was a really fun part of the process..One of the tutors pointed out that the brown board on the bottom was taking away from the piece, as you see below.. She advised me to paint the board white as in the photo to the right and it would give the feeeling that it doesnt end  abruptly..

SECOND ATTEMPT WITH WIRE..

This was my second attempt at the wire 3d piece of the buildings.. I was delighted with how it turned out and learned alot when making this.. I had to make all of the grids individually which took around 25-30 minutes. I made 10 of these grids. I then made 160 little wire holes to attach to each corner so I could feed the wire through. I then attatched it to a small board and got the technitians to drill 16 little holes in the board to make the piece stand up by itslef.. I twas a long process but it was well worth it as I was delighted with the end result!!

FIRST ATTEMPT WITH WIRE..

My first attempt of building the structure with wire was a complete and utter fail.. I had no iddea how to use wire and for some reason just presumed that i would be able to use it. Elaine came around to me and saw what I had been making and basically told me to stop while i was ahead and start a new one. This time she taught me how to make the grids properly using smaller wire to tie the ends toghether and a plyers to create sharp corners.. I was delghted with my second attempt and i thought it came out better than I expected. Des elaine and Giordana came around and suprisingly Des liked the first one that i made which was suprising..

MORE BUILDINGS..

These are some pictures that a friend told me about and thought that they would be relevent to my project.. They are pictures from the Irish Times of the ballymun flats being demolished.. I love the way that  u can see the cubes that make up the building and the grids!!
when i was down in UL a few weeks ago, i noticed that they were building new accomadaition.. It was just the structure of the buildings that were up and it was just a bunch of grids up on yop of each other. This gave me the idea to make wire structure of a building and move the structure in different ways and just play around with it and see what I could do with it..

MY INSPIRATIONS

Jenn Stark's alpha and omega inspired me alot. I really like the idea of this piece and especially the reflections in the mirrors.. When I first saw this, I thought it would look cool if the boxes were all diferent sizes and so I tried that..
This artist JR is really cool.. I love the idea of his project and it's a good video.. so watch!!

MY FIRST STOP MOTION VIDEO..

i photocopied the drawing of the other piece and basically just had fun with it and played around a bit.. it was my first time trying this kind of thing so its not very good but hopefully ill do a better one soon. I probably shouldnt have done the effects as the top video looks alot better.. i think

LITTLE TINY BUILDINGS

I started off this idea by drawing up some sketches plans and measurements. I then made these rectangular boxes out of paper.. it was tricky because every box's measurements had to be exactly right or otherwise they would not fit..
I expected this part of the process to be alot easier than it was.. maybe for my next one ill use a different material and not paper..

I then drew a picture of my eyes and cut them up to the exact measurements and stuck them onto the paper. The idea I had for this piece was that we are the people who make up the city and that these buildings are there because of us. I also liked the idea for this as you actually have to physically move araound it to see what the image is. I have ideas for my next one of these and I am going to push the idea further..

NEW DIRECTION WITH THE PROJECT

After the progress reviews my tutors advised me on taking a new direction with my project.. so I am now looking at growth and development in cities and population. This is alot more exciting and I will still link it to what I have done so far in my project..

THIS VIDEO IS INSANE!!

WOOD

Des left aload of blocks of wood on my desk this week and told me to take things apart and make stuff out of it and basically see what i can do with the materials. I found two artchitects called Eric Remash and  Chris Thomas who made the "Helix Spire" at Burning Man festival in 2010. So i created a mini model out of the wood.. It was enjoyable seeing the different things i could do with the wood and what worked and what didn't..

PROGRESS REVIEW

EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE BEEN DOING LATELY HAS BEEN PRETTY TEDIOUS AND I HAVEN'T REALLY ENJOYED DOING ALOT OF IT SO I DECIDED TO TAKE A BREAK FROM IT AND TO A FEW DRAWINGS THAT I LIKE DOING. I TRIED TO BRING SOME ELEMENT OF MY PROJECT INTO THEM WITH THE GRIDS..
I THINK I NEED TO TAKE A NEW DIRECTION WITH MY PROJECT TOO AS MY ASSESSMENT DIDNT GO TOO WELL.. IM GOING TO DO SOMETHING  LESS PRECISE AND HAVE A LITTLE MORE FUN WITH THE PROJECT!!

MORE COLLAGE

I WANTED TO CREATE A 3D IMAGE THAT IS SYMETRICAL THAT LIGHT COULD THROUGH AND THE SHADOWS WOULD MOVE IN DIFFERENT WAYS.. INSTEAD OF DRAWING THE THING I WANTED TO MAKE I MADE A COLLAGE OF IT OUT OF SOME POSTERS I BOUGHT FOR A EURO!! I LIKED THE PIECE I MADE OUT OF PAPER BUT ELAINE AND DES WERNT TOO IMPRESSED.. THEY SSAID I NEEDED MORE PRIMARY RESEACH AND THAT THERE WAS NO MEANING BEHIND THIS PIECE, WHICH IS TRUE.. I GUESS I GOT A BIT CARRIED AWAY.. I STILL HAVNT GOT USED TO THIS WHOLE ART COLLEGE WAY OF THINKING..

COLLAGE

I WENT BACK TO DOING SOME COLLAGE OF THE GRID PATTERNS THAT I DREW.. DOING THE COLLAGE IS ALMOST EASIER THAN DRAWING THEM BECAUSE DRAWING THEM IS SO TEDIOUS BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET EVERYTHING EXACTLY PERFECT OR IT LOOKS WRONG..
FOR THE COLLAGE I USED MAGAZINES THAT I HAVE PHOTOCOPIED AND USED DIFFERENT COLOURS TO TRY AND GET A 3D EFFECT..
I THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER THAN IT WAS TO MAKE BUT IT WAS ALOT OF CUTTING AND STICKING.. REALLY GLAD IT IS FINISHED.. NOT DOING THIS AGAIN..EVER

MORE LIGHT

I BOUGHT A TORCH FOR 2 EURO WHICH I WAS DELIGHTED WITH AND CAME INTO COLLEGE LATE AT NIGHT TO SEE THE EFFECT THE THE UNATURAL LIGHT HAD ON THE PIECE.. I THOUGHT IT HAD A NICE EFFECT..

LIGHT

THE DAY AFTER PUTTING THIS PIECE UP ON THE WALL IT WAS A NICE DAY AND THE SUN MADE INTERESTING SHADOWS ON THE WALL.. HOW UNEXPECTED.. IM GOING TO DOO MORE STUFF WITH LIGHT AND SHADOWS NOW AND SEE WHERE THAT TAKES ME..

I was messing around with paper and shapes recently. I really like the idea of manipulating something that was a flat object and changing it into something else..
So far this is my favourite thing that I have made, probably because I had the most fun making this and there was numerous ways that I could make it bend which was fun!!

AND MORE PAPER

When I was playing around with the paper earlier and making the different shapes for things that I was making I took a couple of photos of them from different angles that I found interesting..

We got a talk on weaving too and I thought I would give it a shot using paper.. When i looked at these old images that I took it gave me the idea tto weave the paper through but make it interesting weaving some of the paper tighter than the others..
I found it fun to make and was pleased with how it turned out..

MORE PAPER

Des suggested that I make the grid patterns more 3D.. I played around a bit with making a 3D grid pattern out of paper. however it turned out horribly and I wasnt able to move it at all and wasnt what I was going for at all.. Ohh well

PAPER

So I decided to make these patterns that i saw out of paper because i wasnt really sure what to use.. Anyways I enjoyed making these out of paper because it was something that I never really tried before. I think that I will be playing around with papaer more often!!

PHOTOS

I was told by des and Giordana that I needed to take more photos from around the cities for inspiration. So I  went out and took photos of some grid patterns that I saw around the city for some priamry research.
